CONSUMPTION AND CONSUMERISM IN EARLY MODERN ENGLAND

 Consumption studies have arguably transformed the study of early modern cultural history in the past three decades, with the championing of previously neglected sources, application of interdisciplinary approaches, and exploration of the mentalities of acquisition, ownership, and use. But does the accumulation of writing about consuming and consumption in this period amount to much more than the historical equivalent of window-shopping ? It is argued here that greater attention to the consumers as much as the consumed, to the motivations for consuming rather than the act of consumption alone, offers a way out of the explanatory cul-de-sac reached by over-indulgence in the early modern ‘world of goods

Noel had set off for his work as a project manager that Monday morning, while his ten-year-old daughter Molly and son Shea, six, were on holiday with their mother, from whom he is separated.

So where did this rampant blaze start? Noel’s fridge-freezer, said firefighters. Indeed, this most basic of household appliances is where hundreds of house fires start every year.

In the past five years, London Fire Brigade has attended at least one blaze every week — 260 in total — involving fridges and freezers. These have led to 71 serious injuries — and seven deaths.

They include 36-year-old Santosh Benjamin-Muthiah who managed to save his daughters — aged three and three months — by passing them through a first-floor window of their North London home to neighbours before succumbing to the fumes.

His wife, paediatrician Dr Jennifer Benjamin, spent two weeks in a coma following the fire in November 2010 which was sparked by a defective defrost timer on their fridge-freezer.

Earlier this year, reports showed the several consecutive dry years combined with record supercharged California droughts. In 2014, temperatures were by far the highest – fueled mainly by a warmer than normal winter – in the 120 years of record-keeping. On average it was 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the previous standard, set in 1934.
